Fabrics to Flatter the Apple Silhouette

“There is nothing more rare, nor more beautiful, than a woman being unapologetically herself; comfortable in her perfect imperfection. To me, that is the true essence of beauty.” ― Steve Maraboli, Unapologetically You: Reflections on Life and the Human Experience

As image consultants, we often use geometric shapes to identify a woman’s body shape by how muscle and fat distribute throughout her skeletal structure. Every woman is unique, so the bodily dimensions of the bust, waist, and hips, (BWH) is the method used for determining her body shape category.

Women with an apple-shaped body lack a defined waistline and can alternate between smaller or fuller figure bust, slender legs, and narrow hips. Their only challenge is they carry fat in the abdominal region.

If you are apple-shaped, steer clear of fabrics that aren’t flattering and draw attention to areas where you don’t want to spotlight. Such fabric choices will only make you look larger with not so tidy silhouette. Therefore, avoid shiny overly clingy fabrics that lack stretch such as satin, spandex, chiffon, and rayon.

For a tailored and polished look, the number one rule for draping the apple-shaped silhouette is to choose non-constricting fabrics that give you room to breath and stylishly skim your curves. You want to opt for fabrics that are easy to slip in comfortably, provide substance, and  allow you to breathe.

For those of you who enjoy wearing patterns or prints, choose prints like horizontal stripes, small polka dots, houndstooth, and gingham and wear them on the lower half of the body.

The apple-shaped objective is to choose styles that minimize her upper torso, while at the same time emphasizing her hips and legs. The best style choices for the apple-shaped silhouette are:

  • wide or scoop necks that expand the chest area and make you look in proportion
  • solid color and crossover blouse of a simple design
  • solid color and crossover blouse of a simple design
  • Dresses or tops in drop-waist, straight line or shirtwaist style
  • A-line skirt or trousers that are nipped in at the waist will create favorable hourglass look
  • Trousers or jeans with front pockets will bring the eye away from your bottom tummy

Avoid styles horizontal lines, patch pockets, frills, wide lapels, or short jackets and vests on the upper body. Also, don’t use bulky fabrics or heavy layering on the top.

Most apple-shaped women shy away from accessories, in particular, necklaces for the fear of attracting attention to the torso area. No fret, ladies. An essential accessory is a belt; a belt helps to create the illusion of a waistline and add overall dimension and definition. Long necklaces, draws the eyes downward, away from the midsection, creation the illusion of a longer torso.

That’s right! The slim legs are the highlight of the apple silhouette. She adores her chiseled, sleek legs in eye-catching high heels and not ashamed to showcase them in a classy, courageous, confident way. Skinny trousers that fall straight from the hip works well for apple-shaped but coordinate with a tunic, jackets, and tops that flow over buttocks for a polished look.
